Large Data Mode

Some processes can be very large and complex and require a specialized approach when analyzing them. From the technical side, their amounts of data demand much more resources to ensure performance time and stability. For this reason, Timeline offers a special Large Data Mode. In this mode, the program optimizes its resources to handle big data sets without affecting performance. This mode is helpful when there is no possibility to reduce the amount of source data for the analysis or the process in focus is so large and complex that dividing its data may harm its integrity. In this article, you will find some more detailed advice on when to consider switching your project to Large Data Mode.

Switching project mode has a significant impact on data representation in it. We strongly recommend getting yourself familiar with all topics of this article beforehand:

  • There are several options to switch a project to Large Data Mode. To learn more about these options, see Switching Your Project to Large Data Mode.
  • In Large Data Mode Timeline sacrifices some of its functionality for the sake of performance. Before switching your project to Large Data Mode, get yourself familiar with Large Data Mode Limitations.

When to use Large Data Mode

Switching to Large Data Mode practically means that you need a broad overview of a complex process rather than a deep insight into its parts. The use case examples below are to help you to decide when it is efficient to do it:

  • You cannot divide your large source data into volumes.
Depending on the life span of a process instance and the number of branching transactions within it, the time frame covered by the data necessary for analysis can be very wide. As a result, the data size can become really big. If it is not possible for the purposes of an analysis task to narrow down this time frame, you may consider using Large Data Mode.
  • You need to upload large files in one iteration.
Upload and processing of files bigger than 1 GB in Standard Mode takes too much time so it may seem infinite and even cause the program to stop responding. If you attempt to load more than 1 GB of data to your regular project using a browser, Timeline will prompt you to switch to Large Data Mode, ensuring the success of the upload.
  • You need to constantly add data to a project or use scheduled upload from your data source.
Long-term monitoring may require multiple data sets to be loaded in the same project over time. Though a single iteration may contain a relatively small data portion, after a series of uploads the overall size of a project can grow over 500 MB. This size is the minimum considered large in Timeline and can affect processing performance in Standard Mode. If the total data size of your project exceeds 500 MB, Timeline will prompt you to switch to Large Data Mode upon your next upload. If you keep the project in Standard Mode, in this case, no further data upload is possible unless you switch to Large Data Mode.
