Connecting to ODBC data sources
Timeline 5.3 allows uploading data from ODBC compatible databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL to the Timeline repository. ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is a standard database access method. To connect to ODBC compatible databases, use the ODBC data sources option in the repository data source.
Important. If upload using the ODBC data sources option fails on Timeline 5.3.0 instances deployed on-premises on Linux systems, you need to download and install the patch-file. For details, see Patch installation. This issue is fixed in later versions.
To upload data from ODBC compatible databases, follow these steps:
- Configure the ODBC data source in the Repository.
In your Timeline repository, you need to set up an ODBC connection for your compatible databases enabling the ODBC data sources option and adding the adapter configuration.
Depending on how you use Timeline through an ABBYY SAAS instance or install on-premises, the connection to ODBC databases has to be configured differently. For detailed instructions, see Configuring ODBC data source in the Repository below. - Start uploading your data.
To upload data from the desired database, select the configured adapter. For detailed instructions, see How to upload data manually below.
Configuring ODBC data source in the Repository
- Open a Timeline repository (click View > Repository)
- Go to the Details > Data sources tab and select ODBC data sources.
- Click Add configuration.
- In the ODBC import configuration form, fill in the following fields:
- Name
Enter a unique name that identifies the data source you are configuring the connection to. - Connection string
This string passes to an ODBC driver to initiate the connection with an ODBC-compliant database.
Depending on how you use Timeline through an ABBYY SAAS instance or install on-premises, the configuration for connecting to ODBC databases is different.
Important. ODBC connection string must not contain line breaks.

- Query
Specify a string of SELECT query to the ODBC data source to get data.
- After configuring your data source, click Save.
How to upload data manually
To upload your data manually, perform the following:
- In the panel on the left, select Upload.
- The Import and upload dialog will open.
Note. If you enabled the ODBC data sources and the Manual file upload options in the Data Sources tab, the Select the type of your upload dialog will open. Select External adapter. After that, the Import and upload dialog will open. - Click the Adapter field. All configured ODBC data sources will be added to this list. Select the desired adapter.
- Click the Table name field and enter a new table name or select an existing table.
- Click Upload.
Once the upload is complete, the following information is displayed: the number of files processed, time taken to process the files.
Click OK to close the upload dialog.
Now you can select the required one in the Tables list and start working with data from it.
