Set Up Connection Between Systems

Preconditions

In the example, we assume the following points:

Your system should support the OAuth Authorization Code flow.
To learn more, read the specification about the Authorization Code grant in OAuth 2.0 > section-4.1 > Authorization Code grant - https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6749#section-4.1
You need to have an Account Owner or Admin role in the Timeline account.

Steps

The first step to take is to prepare Timeline for future connection with your system. To do so, you need to register an OAuth client in Timeline. It will allow your system to initiate authentication to interact with the information on the Timeline's side.

1. Register an OAuth client to connect your system to Timeline.

Log into your Timeline account and navigate to Account > OAuth & OpenID Connect tab.
Click on +Register client.
Fill in the client details fields with the information about your system. In the example below, find the brief explanation of some settings and their possible values.

Name	A name to identify the new OAuth client. Value: MyApp
App URL	A link to your application's homepage. Users will see this link when asked to grant access to their information held in Timeline. A familiar webpage link helps to gain trust. Value: https://MyApp.com
Redirect URI	A full URL of an endpoint in your application or system which you want to connect to Timeline. Timeline will send an authorization code to this endpoint, and a user will be redirected to this URL after providing consent to give access to their Timeline account data. Value: https://MyApp.com/api/oauth/callback
Client type	For example, select Confidential. If you use this option, your application should be able to keep credentials in a secure way without exposing them to unauthorized parties, and you have a trusted backend server to store secrets.
Grant type	For example, select Authorization Code with the PKCE addition. This grant type is used to exchange an authorization code for an access token.
Scopes	Available permissions for the OAuth client. For example, use Write projects and Read projects options to upload data to projects and receive calculated statistics.

Click Register. The OAuth dialog will re-open with two additional fields pre-filled: Client ID and Client Secret. They are needed for future interactions.

The next step to take is to complete the connection on your side.
