What do I do if a user switches between tasks while logging?

If you are unable to control user actions or suspect that recorded logs may include overlapping tasks due to users switching ad hoc between task types we recommend reviewing the events contained in your log before loading it into an ABBYY Timeline project. You can preview a log in one of the following applications:

  • On the Recording Service website if the Recorder was installed in Server Managed mode.
  • In the Recorder Log Viewer application if the Recorder was installed in Standalone mode.

Open the log and examine the recorded events. If the user switched between different tasks, the log will contain so-called overlapping tasks. You will not be able to mark up and analyze such a log within one Timeline project. Instead, you will need to create multiple Timeline projects.

For logs with overlapping tasks, follow these steps:

  1. Load the logs into several Timeline projects (the number of projects will depend on the number of overlapping tasks).
  2. In each Timeline project, define the task whose events you are going to analyze. Mark any overlapping events and their corresponding applications as "ignored" if neither the events nor the applications are used in the task to be analyzed.
    In other words:
    1. Open one of the several Timeline projects and define the start and end event of the first task.
Any events related to other tasks should be marked as "ignored." The applications used for the ignored events may be added to the "Ignored" list if they are not used by the first task.
    2. Open the next Timeline project and define the start and end event of the second task
Any events related to other tasks should be marked as "ignored." The applications used for the ignored events may be added to the "Ignored" list if they are not used by the second task.
